VBS - Day 2

This morning we again headed up the mountain. On our way up, we handed out underwear and candy to the kids. The underwear was a hit! On our way home, some kids flashed us to show us they were wearing their new gifts. It was so funny!

The bus takes us halfway and we walk the rest – over a stream and up a hill. There is a short cut that is straight up and a bit scary and precarious. We usually go the long way. If we are focused and going fast, it only takes 25 minutes. If we are taking our time, it may take 40 minutes or more. Even though it’s easier than the short cut, it’s still a tiring hike.

We arrived at the home around 10:30 and the kids were excited to have us back.

We began with songs and the Sarah taught about being a part of the body of Christ. She did a great job. She used a Mr Potato Head to illustrate her point. If someone isn’t using their gifts, there is a part missing (ex. Mr. Potato Head without a nose.) If someone is trying to use a gift that isn’t theirs, the body doesn’t function right (ex. Mr. Potato Head with an arm where his nose should be.) The kids really seemed to get what she was saying.

After the lesson, the kids got to color. There were about 50 kids from the village peering in from outside. Fortunately, we had enough sheets for them to come in and color too.

Next was the craft. We made prayer journals the kids decorated. They had a lot of fun with that.

Meanwhile, the guys began working on the office. They put up screens over the windows and started cementing the walls. Some older boys from the village assisted them.

George was busy. He had to go down the mountain back to Korogwe to pick up the door for the office. He also brought back a malaria test and medication for a little girl who was sick. Fortunately, the test was negative and she felt better after rest and prayer.

When it was time to leave, the village kids shouted their goodbyes from the church. They continued as we hiked down the mountain.

On our way, George opened my back pack and I thought I smelled chicken. I crack up as I looked over at him munching on a chicken drumstick. While he was in town getting the supplies, he stopped at the White Parrot for lunch. So, we had a nice little snack on our way down.

In the evening, Herbert and Emily invited us over for dinner. It was really good. She had fish, rice, stew, beans and vegetables. Sadly, Herbert told us his younger brother died that afternoon and he would be preparing for the burial. Please lift him and his family up in prayer.

  1. Chicken on a stick...so many questions...
    1. Was it in your backpack the whole day then you ate it?
    2. Well, I guess that was my only question.

  2. No. He left halfway through the day to get more supplies. He bought the chicken before he came back up. So they hadn't been there for long! Were you dying thinking about chicken on a bone AND it being in a backpack all day?!
