In June we are bringing the World Cup to Tonj. For those of you who don't know, that is the "Superbowl" of soccer, or football, as it is known world wide. The World Cup lasts one month. We are going to have DSTV for that month and will be showing it in town on a big screen. Before and after the matches and during half time, we'll be showing special ads. In addition to the gospel, we'll be educating the people of various health and cultural topics such as: HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Immunizations, Personal Hygeine, Education, Violence and Nutrition. The reason these ads are so special is because we are filming them ourselves. With our small cameras and video recorders, we'll be attempting to make PSAs about these topics. We had our first brainstorming meeting yesterday and today set out to film one of them. A couple teachers from the local school who attend our church are helping us this week since they are off due to the elections. The two of them, Sabet and I filmed our Nutrition PSA. We want to encourage the people to grow their own vegetables so they will add important nutrients to their diet. It's doable, we just have to show them how. So, we interviewed Awad, who maintains our garden, and took photos of vegetables. We also made a salad and compared it to a bowl of lentils and bread and asked which one had more vitamins. Later, filmed in the clinic and did interviews with Dennis and Margaret which will be used in other PSAs. Even though Sabet will take short clips and edit them together, the teacher asking the questions was so serious. He was like a talk show host. "Margaret, thank you for being here today.... we are pleased to be here at your office....is there anything else you would like your listeners and viewers to know..." It was so hard not to laugh!
I had such a fun day. I had a nice time working with the teachers and it was a blast using some of our compound workers in the videos. We have about 18 spots to do so we have a lot of work ahead of us. A lot of the work will be in the editing.
