One Week Before The Election and We Need Your Prayers!
The election draws near and after threats by some candidates to pull out and much speculation that the elections were canceled, we have been told the elections are still on for next Sunday. As the town gears up for the big event, there has been some unrest in the area. In order to avoid potential violence, the army has been searching houses for guns and disarming everyone. The army has been unnecessarily rough in many cases. Our pharmacist, Peter, has a ten year old sister who was beaten by the army as a warning to others who may have guns. This morning our driver, Dabu, had his house broken into by the army in an attempt to search the place.
So far today, we have three patients at the clinic who need treatment after being beaten up by the army. The army isn't immune to attack either. We heard gunshots this morning and within a few minutes, a soldier was brought in. He had been shot in the abdomen by a man whose house they were attempting to disarm. Sabet shared the gospel with him and prayed with him. He nodded when asked if he wanted to accept Jesus. Our staff stopped the bleeding, bandaged him up and now he is being driven to Wau for additional treatment. The man who shot the soldier was named Taban. He was shot and died immediately. Taban worked for a short time on the compound at one point. We know he heard about the Lord, but don't know if he gave his life to Christ.
Please pray for Tonj and all of South Sudan this week. This is the country's first open election and a lot is at stake. We aren't sure what to expect this week and next as the elections occur and the results are announced. Pray for peace in the area, a safe and swift disarmament and a fair and uncontested election. Our staff will be immediately evacuated should any threat to the compound occur. Suzy and the children are in Nairobi and Sabet and the staff have peace about staying and seeing the clinic in operation and having the chance to pray for those around them. We covet your prayers for their safety.
We are trusting our Lord, who is God, to work a miracle in the lives of these Sudan leaders. He is their only hope for a better future.
By the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Tonj Team
