When In Rome

Without a car, our transportation choices are taxi, tuk-tuk, piki piki (motorcycle) and boda boda (bicycle). We use taxi's very rarely because they are expensive. Tuk-tuks are cheaper, but still more than a piki piki. Boda bodas are ok only for short periods (plus I feel bad for the poor guy having to pedal my not so tiny frame around!). For these reasons, our main mode of transportation is a piki piki. We hop on the back of one and off we go. George and I usually ride on one together (plus the driver). There are no helmets and the roads are bumpy. Yes, I know. They are not the safest. But, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. At first it was scary, but now it's a way of life and no big deal.

As I got further along in the pregnancy, it was a bit of a tight squeeze with three of us on there. Someone asked me how I was able to ride one pregnant and I said it was no big deal. There was plenty of room. Today we got a visit from George's sister and 4 nieces and nephews.

(Doesn't his sister look so much like him!!!)

As they left, I was shocked to hear they were going to go home on one piki piki. That would be two adults and four kids on one motorcycle. Impossible! Tabitha assured me they could do it and in fact it's how they arrived. Here is what they looked like while leaving.

(The driver is our friend Drogba. It's at his house where we are renting a room. They are outside of our house.)

Even that is too risky for me. For those of you who may freak out thinking George and I will be doing that with Eli, don't worry. We will stick to tuk tuks and taxis until the Lord provides a car.

  2. Oh my gosh!!!!! That picture of the two adults and four kids on one motorcycle is just hard to believe!!! How in the world!? I was thinking it would be too hard to get the two of you on there plus the driver. I am totally impressed!!! I don't think I could ride on a motorcycle everywhere... but I guess you're right--you just get used to it! YES... I am SO glad to hear that Eli won't be a piki piki rider for quite some time!! Praying the Lord provides a car for you!! :) Love, Alicia
