Impala Park

Family Fun Days continue as we attempt to spend time with as much family as possible. Today we hung out with George's nieces and nephews. Usually when we talk about George's family, we are referring to the Okech family. They are they ones that took him in when he was in high school. However, he has a biological brother, Fred, and sister, Tabitha, who each have a boy and a girl. That is who we were with today. They usually live in the village which is far, but recently they have been staying in Kisumu so we got to take them out.

George picked this up this morning and they were dressed in their best for a day out. They were so cute. Then they picked me up and we first had lunch.

Then we headed to Impala Park. This is an animal sanctuary and national park located in Kisumu on the shore of Lake Victoria. It's really beautiful. For the first time, I got to use my resident status to get in the park cheaply. It's about $30 for a foreigner, but was only about $3.50 for me now. Yeah!

We walked around and saw a lot of animals. While many animals like lions, cheetahs, leopard, etc. are in cages, impalas, zebras, monkeys and other animals wander around the park freely.

At the baboon exhibit, we met up with the animal keeper who was feeding them. All the animals at Impala Park are rescues. These baboons, he raised since they were two weeks old. Normally baboons are very naughty, but they are familiar with him so he could go inside without any problems. He took my camera inside to get better shots for us.

The keeper, also worked with the cheetahs and let George and I get up close and personal with one. As we petted the cheetah, he purred!

Once we saw all the animals, we went down by the lake for a snack and to relax. It was a gorgeous day. Being by the water makes me so happy. It reminds me a little of being near the ocean.

After the kids ate their snack, George played some games with them.

After each game, they lined up for a piece of candy. Notice the big kid in the back? :)

We had a great day. The kids are adorable and so well behaved.

Before we knew it, it was time to head home.

Can't wait until our next day together. We thank the Lord for this sweet time to spend with family.

  2. Um, you were able to pet a cheetah? Ok, I'm pretty sure no one else I know has ever done that! Once again...you've hit "hero status" in my book!

    Love you friend! Great pics!
