Many of you may wonder about Eli’s middle name. Have we gone nuts like the celebrities… Blue Ivy, Apple, Pilot Inspector? No, I don’t think so. He takes it from his dad. George was originally given the name Jerry Rollings Evenings Orwa. As he got older, people were confused by his name so it was changed to George Odhiambo Orwa. Many people in the Luo community are named according to the time they are born. Odhiambo means born in the evening. The female version of that is Adhiambo Born at night is Otieno and Atieno. My Luo name is Achieng, which is born in the afternoon. George’s parents gave him the English version of the Luo word for being born in the evening and later changed it to the Luo version. Although Eli wasn’t technically in the evening, we wanted to give him a name after his father and in tribute to George’s parents, who are no longer with us. So, that is why we chose George’s original middle name… Evenings.
