First Lab Client

Today our lab was put to the test... by me! I have been sick for the last six days with severe stomach pain. Yesterday I started taking medication to ease the symptoms, but not treat the cause. Since it has been going on so long we no longer suspected food poisoning. George, our new lab tech, tried to convince me to give him a stool sample. I was so mortified about that thought that I said no way. However, once the pain continued, I knew I needed to find out what was going on. So, I told George "ok, give me the stuff." So this morning once I had what I needed, I hid it in a bag and couldn't even look him in the eyes when I gave it to him. I was so embarrassed. A few minutes later, he called me to the lab and had me look at my specimen. Now, that was odd. Has anyone else seen yours up close and personal before? He told me I had several amoebas and lots of bacteria in there. That's what was causing all the pain. Now that we know what is going on, Dennis was able to prescribe the right medication that will get rid of those little suckers.

Although it was embarrassing (Hi George, welcome to Tonj... here is my stool sample), having the lab is a huge blessing. In the past we have had to guess what is wrong with us and wait to be tested in Nairobi. Now, we can be tested here solve the problem quickly.

I hope to feel much better soon.

  3. Thanks Traci. Even at home, I was very susceptible to stomach bugs. Here the only difference is the bugs are way worse!
