Tonight was a big step for me.
I have the palate of a seven year old. I love boxed mac & cheese, fish sticks, fruit roll ups & skittles. I never used to be adventurous when it came to eating. I never tried new things and was perfectly happy ordering a quesadilla or chicken strips when going to a restaurant.
When I went to Africa I was forced out of my comfort zone. I could not say no to new foods when it was offered to me. It would have been rude considering the scarcity of resources. A big lesson I learned was that I would not die if I ate something I didn't like. It was possible to eat something even if I didn't want to. Imagine that! As a result of my epiphany and circumstances, I tried lots of new things and found new foods that I actually enjoyed (red snapper). There were some I didn't enjoy so much (goat), but I managed to get them down anyway.
Since I have been back home, I have tried lots of new foods. I have learned to say yes instead of no all the time. Tonight I tried sushi for the first time. The Breitbarths are sushi connoisseurs and took me out for sushi. I tried just about all of the different types we ordered: hamachi, red snapper, salmon, tuna and eel. I did not try the fish eggs!
Hamachi was the best one. After trying them all, I had to take a break for a bit. The fish flavor was a bit intense. So I had chicken and gyoza (potstickers). By the time we left, I was stuffed. I had a great time and am so glad I tried it. Now if someone wants to go for sushi, I can join them instead of opting for my fish preference - a filet-o-fish.

This was so funny!!! OMG, now you can say you have an "adventurous" palate! That will also translate to "expensive" palate! (although, somehow, I think filet o fish will remain your 1st choice~)

FYI - I would read your blog even if you weren't a missionary to Africa, and you were just a regular person writing about their everyday life.....your everyday life is so entertaining for me!!!!
