It's a ...... Girl!!!!!

George and I are proud to announce that there is a new addition to our family.

Nala Jean Orwa came into our family two days ago. George's dog, German, who lives in Kibos with his parents, gave birth to 8 puppies around New Years Day. All the others were given away and Nala was the last one remaining. In Kenya, animals are treated very differently than in the US. Here, dogs are for security, not pets. They live in a dog house during the day and roam around the property, protecting it at night. The fact that dogs and cats live in the house, sleep on the couches/beds, and eat very well in the US is so bizarre to most Kenyans. Fun fact: even the dogs eat ugali here! Dogs don't eat fancy dog food. They just eat whatever is leftover and that always includes ugali.

I think Nala will end up being both, a guard dog (her mom is a German Sheppard) and a pet. I can't not love her and spoil her. I just can't let her snuggle on the bed with me. :( We do need security so I'll have to tame my babying of her so she can be tough.

Nala is so cute. She's very playful and loves attacking our feet. For now, she'll be living at our place in Kisumu, but we hope we can eventually bring her to Tanzania with us.

  1. I can't believe you got a puppy!!! Hooray! Mike asked me what I wanted for Valentines Day...my answer....to sit in a pile of puppies for 20 minutes. I know, I'm weird!

Love you guys! Happy Valentines Day!

  3. Hahahaha. That is so funny and not weird at all! Puppies and kittens are irresistible to me. George does not get my baby talk to animals. George's parent's cat just had babies a few days ago. I said if he doesn't like my baby talk to Nala, he should see me when I see the kittens!

For some reason, while in Kenya, I love all the names from the Lion King. I named the neighbor's cat, Rafiki, (which is the Swahili word for friend). Next up... Simba (which means lion)?
