Meet Awad

Awad is a cool guy. He is Mr. "no problem." He says that all the time. When he is asked to do something, his answer is always "no problem." Also, when he talks to people, he calls them, "my brother" or "my sister." Awad has worked for Sabet and Suzy since they have been in Sudan. He has come a long way. He used to be drunk all the time, but stopped drinking and is now one of their most trusted employees. Awad is in charge of security (finding guards) and the garden. He has managed to grow quite the garden which is difficult here. Often we use his carrots, lettuce, cilantro, tomatoes, green peppers, egg plants, cucumber, pumpkins and other items he grows in our meals. Awad also is the one to go to Wau whenever we need supplies. Every time he comes back, he tells us about the good deals he got. "They want 25 pounds, I get it for 20." When he gets back, I go over his receipts and often he brings back more money than he should have! Awad speaks Arabic and Dinka. Suzy has taught him English and he speaks it very well. Occasionally, some words are lost in translation. One day, we asked him to get hot dogs in Wau and he brought back coconut. We also asked for that, but he thought it was called hot dog. He said "I bring you very nice hot dog" and opened a bag of coconut. It was hilarious. Then another time he brought us sardines and the next time it was spam. Finally the time after that he brought us hot dogs! Success at last! Awad is great and so nice to work with.

  1. Who wrote that? What the heck is "the jazz"? Have I been gone that long that I have lost touch with what the cool kids are saying?
